Description: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as Ubiquinone, is a nutrient which is abundant in human cells. It was discovered in 1957 in the United States, and then was later the subject of Nobel Prize research in Edinburgh, Scotland. Actions: Coenzyme Q10 is important for cell health as well as energy production. One of the main focuses of research with CoQ10 is with cardiovascular patients. Studies have found that levels of Coenzyme Q10 are low in people with heart disease because CoQ10 is heavily concentrated in the mitochondria cells in the heart. This also explains how vital the role of Ubiquinone is in overall health. The body's levels of Coenzyme Q-10 decline with age, therefore it is necessary to supplement the diet. Food does not contain significant amounts of CoQ10 and the body does not produce enough Coenzyme Q10 on its own, so supplementation is imperative in order to have adequate amounts of it. |
